Brigid

A short comic based on the goddess Brigid and how she's changed through time.

Part one of my main honours project, this comic was created for the Gray's 2020 interim show, and sought to put a modern twist on an old god, exploring how times change and their gods change with them. Brigid, starting out as a goddess of the Tuatha Dé Danann, associated with spring, fertility, healing, poetry and smithcraft, was later absorbed into Christianity as Saint Brigid, and later still into Haitian Vodou as Maman Brigitte.

These adaptations made me wonder about the possibility of gods adapting with the times more than just culturally, leading to the basis for this story, where we come to meet another incarnation of the goddess in a much less divine form. Brigid finds herself in a new life, now in this day and age, studying ancient literature at university and doing her best to be what she's always wanted to be - human.

Later this project grew to include elements of modern fantasy, opening it up to the prospect of including other religiously based supernatural beings and other possible gods.
Brigid Initial Design:
I wanted the design of the character here to reflect past interpretations but also appear more down to earth in a literal sense. This involved lots of tweaking regarding her age especially, and what angle I wanted to tackle the story from in order to tell it best.
Soren and Barry:
Barry and Soren were designs of more literal angelic figures, and a possibility of more heavily supernatural elements that could have been integrated into the story over time.
Sam:
A concept for a second possible modern god, this time Baron Samedi, another of the death loa.
