The brief for the 2020 Kelpies Prize For Illustration focused around the theme of 'My Scotland', and as such I decided to illustrate a concept that speaks strongly to me personally regarding one of Scotland's most interesting aspects - how its stories are passed down from generation to generation.
In doing this I had a chance to explore the elements of visual storytelling often found in children's books. including short poetry, dynamic imagery and (best of all) monsters. Following the tale of a fisherman on one supernatural night, the short tale ends with him passing on the story of his experiences to his grandchildren years later.

Fisherman, Fisherman what do you spot?

Only a seal? Is she lost to the loch?

Fisherman, Fisherman, follow if you dare.

There are monsters in these waters, ghostly mares.

Fisherman Fisherman, a lucky escape. Be careful at night on the waters of the lake.
